*Oats are gluten-free by nature, but some are processed in plants that also process gluten-containing ingredients. Read the package instructions for more info, and, if necessary, buy oats that are certified to not contain gluten.

** Pumpkin pie spice is a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and clove. I recommend buying the blend at your local natural grocer (it’s inexpensive and contains proper proportions), or you can make your own if you’d like.

-1/2 cup of frozen raspberries (frozen strawberries or mixed berries would also be lovely)
-1/2 an avocado
-2 big handfuls of baby spinach leaves
-2 tablespoons (or more) of raw cacao powder (or use a mix of carob and cacao or just carob)
-1.5 cups of water
-2 trays of ice cubes
-1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
-2 droppers of liquid stevia or about 50 drops (you can use a lot more as this was not overly sweet)

Blend all ingredients together until it forms a thick, smooth ice cream consistency. If you don’t have a high powered blender like a Blendtec or Vitamix, you might want to add more water. Or try blending in parts.

-15 ounces black beans, drained and rinsed
-2 bananas
-1/3 cup honey, maple syrup or molasses
-1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
-1 tablespoon cinnamon
-1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-1/4 cup raw sugar (optional)
-1/4 cup instant oats (gluten free if preferred)

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease an 8- by 8-inch pan and set aside. Combine all ingredients, except oats, in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth, scrapping sides as needed. Stir in the oats. If too soft, add another 1/4 cup oats or flour.

Pour batter into the pan. Bake 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool before slicing.

Notes: Because there isn’t any flour these brownies come out pretty dense.
Rolled oats may be substituted for the instant oats. Put the rolled oats in the food processor.
Use optional sugar if your bananas are still green and not very ripe.
