I took my first real breath yesterday

pranayama

Light seekers,

How many of you are shallow breathers?  I am.  Why?  Not sure.  Fear?  Anxiety?  Perhaps I don’t breathe deeply because in some corner of my domesticated girl damage a deep breath means a rounded belly and a rounded belly is “bad”.  You know what I mean?  Suck it in, keep it slim.  Yesterday that changed.  I worked with the most amazing healer and for 90 minutes all we did was breathe – I mean REALLY BREATHE.

I got high.  I cried.  My body shook.  I started to sweat, to laugh.  The world opened up and kissed me.  Whoa…  It was frickin’ cool!  Breathing can do that?  You bet!

The deeper we went the more clarity I felt.  I peeked at the dumb dumb beliefs that hold me back.  The emotional vampires (renovate the rolodex!), physical blockages, and spiritual disconnects lit up like christmas trees.  Dang, after all this time I still have issues in my tissues.  Well, I guess that’s kinda cool.  No, I know that’s VERY cool.  Solving the puzzle that is me is tres interesting.  Never a dull moment on the path…

Lots of folks have advised me to practice pranayama – yeah, yeah, breath work – snooze (the voice of me pre-yesterday).  I’m definitely mindful of it in my yoga practice but truthfully, it kinda ends there.  Often times before a speech my breath is like a roller coaster.  If I don’t stop, drop, roll and pray, I shoot out of the gates with guns blazing and then fizzle out at the end.  People love to watch my circus but what the heck did I really say?  The light show muffles the meaning.  The craziest part about it is that I talk about the importance of breathing in my workshops but healer heal thy self and quit the double standard!  They really need it.  Hellooo?  YOU really need it jackass! Oops, I meant to say sweetheart.

At the end of my session I was an open vessel longing for a bucket of water to flush the muck that the breath dug up.  I walked the streets of New York giddy and clear.  It was spooky fun.  In retrospect I never should have scheduled work meetings afterwards.  I acted like one of those spacey raw foodists who are just a little too high on life to take them seriously.  Who knew that O2 can replace shrooms!

Without oxygen there is no life.  Cancer hates oxygen.  Without water there is no life.  Water conducts energy, electricity.  These two substances are key elements of life force.  Are you getting enough of them?

Because it feels so good to feel so good, I’m going back for more.  Come with me.  Take some time to get frisky with your lungs.  Listen to your body when it ask you for hydration.

I’m off to give a speech.  Guess what I’ll be doing before I open my yap?

Peace & a deep delicious, highly nutritious breath,

Kris

Yes! Yes! Breathing is soooo goood!

I shallow breathe too! One of the reasons, I just realized while reading your blog, comes from years of not wanting to disturb my father (when I was a little girl) with breathing too loudly when we were watching the telly together! (He was such a sensitive artist, eccentric I would have to sit in silence in order to hang out with him) How silly is love sometimes.

Thanks for the entry Kris, I am going to let those sighs OUT! And perhaps even talk to him about that. Such a big reveal so early.

Love

Great blog. Perfect for my day. Thanks so much. -CF

Kris, I LOVE your writing style. So honest & engaging!

Would you be willing to share where you went for the breathwork? I’ll be in NYC next week and would love to try it out, if poss. Thx!

How do you always hit the nail on the head! I am a shallow breather. During dicernment one of the first hours before our therapy classes we had to sit and breathe. Sometime I would just flood with tears. And others would bring relief. But I have noticed that I can even get sore from not breathing fully and deeply. I think you are right about the suck it in thing. But it seems the older I get and the more you juice the less dunlap there is to suck in although I think after this four months of hospitals I am really lacking in muscles.. Thanks for this beautiful reminder.. and you are a sweet heart.. Although I am writing breath Jackass on my computer to give me a smile. hugs. callie

I stopped and did a few minutes of SERIOUS deep breathing before commenting. Thank you for sharing. I meditate and it is indeed one of those things we tehnd to “forget”… to breath. I appreciate the reminder. Maybe this is why yawning feels so sinfully good. It forces you to get oxygen allllllllllll the way down into the belly.

Rawk on Kris. Rawk on.

oh this is beyoooooootiful, krisaliscious. and so synchronicious too – i just had a healing earlier this week, and my homework from it was just to breathe. breathe like a baby, in and out through my nose, letting this beautiful belly of mine rise and fall, soar and sing, rest and fill.
you are so loved!

I know this sounds odd but I swear I have never felt better than the days when I was no longer sick, but not totally well and was still giving myself all the time in the world to do nothing but simply be and breathe. Lots of yoga. Lots of walking. Lots of acupuncture. Lots of meditation. I worked out that I was spending roughly 3-4 hours of my day doing nothing but breathing. Nothing better in the whole world than giving that to ourselves. Just time and space and presence.

yes, the breath of life, it is key you are correct my dear!!! When I meditate, do deep breathing, truly let go, that is where bliss lives. There is really nothing like it. The other morning I did one and tears were flowing and yet..it was very peaceful, not heaving sobs, just stored up grief.. it needed out!
Sometimes I talk so fast and so much, like a barbed wire fence to keep other feelings out and in the end, keep all those not so great ones in too.

love you so much and your juicy breath!

You are such a magical little lightning bug full of power and energy….Breathe On!!!

=)

“still have issues in my tissues”…LOVE it and thank you for the reminder to BREATHE

OMG – it’s so funny you bring this up b/c just today I’m reading from a book called ‘The Second Coming’ – series of interviews with the Archangel Gabriel – yeah, I know it’s wacky – it’s through a channel. Anyway, here’s what Gabriel says about health and breathing:

‘Breathing accesses the sensation of being. This is why humans don’t breathe. That’s why they stop breathing b/c breathing produces feeling. And feeling is the sensation of the movement of the life energy throught he body. When the movement of that life energy through feeling is associated w/pain, human beings begin to stop the breath process to stop pain. It happens very early in childhood and gradually increases into adolescence and adulthood. So by the time you are an adult you have pretty much begun a slow movement towards your annihilation simply through the process of shutting off feeling… you have been given the gift of life in breath, the secret of life in the breath. If you use that secret of life, you have the ability to regenerate life endlessly… As much as you are able to breathe in is as much of life as you are able to receive, that you feel you have a right to receive. In limiting your taking in of life, you will also be limiting what you feel you have to give to life, what you feel you can expose to life.’

Anyway, they go on and on… thanks Kris. Today I dedicate to breathing fully and receiving and giving and regenerating of life!

Yeah, for breathe work! Did I just say that. I remember the first time I took a weekend workshop that involved two cathartic breathing sessions – freaked me out! There were way too many ikky emotions locked up my tissues. I finally surrendered to the breathe and man oh man does it feel good to get to those ikky parts and release them. Go Breathe Go!

Thanks, Kris, for the reminder. I now enjoy feeling my belly moving in and out – expanding and contracting with the energy of the universe and of love!

Excellent blog post, Kris! I loved imagining you walking the streets, half floating with the bliss of breath!

Lots of love to you,

Wendi
XOXOXO

Thanks Kris … sooooo true about the belly thing, i am a few pounds overweight and feel funny when I’m in yoga and the teacher says to take a full breath. She always says .. breathe yogis breathe the air comes free with your memebership = )

Your honesty is staggering Kris. If I knew you in person, I’m quite sure that I would love you. You’d be in my posse if I had anything to say about it.
Peace to you and yours, Penny

I breathe before playing music. Centering the mind and body to allow the best to flow forth. That is precious. After a couple surgeries & chemo I didn’t feel as if I could every breath fully again. When I go to Kripalu and also read here on your blog about breath..all’s fine and right in my face. On my own though…yup I went shallow again. Thanks for the reminder! Be well!

Forgot..I see the lovely analom valom (sp?)breathing picture. While riding a bike, with the wind in my hair, but nervously awaiting test results I was trying to practice this breathing technique with one hand. talk about multi tasking! I needed exercise (endorphins) and I needed to breath so…what’s a woman to do….all

Ok soooo I love the whole breathing thing- never really realized even how i was really breathing until i read your post. Now the key is to freaking start breathing!!!! I will have to work on that!! Or maybe find a GURU like u did ??? Anyhow the water thing is SUPERRRRRRR important and I actually found a company with the BEST option for filered water. It is considered “LIVE” water and they also have another machine that takes the water and then oxiginates it…I am soooooooo excited about their products that I am now a wellness consultant!!! Anyhow, you REALLY REALLY need to check it out!! It’s called the PiMag water gravitational system. It also is electric free and serves the water at room temp. They also have for under the sink etc, but the over the counter works GREAT for me!!! Here is my link..

Hope it helps you!!! They also have an AMAZING magnet line and air filter!!! A MUST SEE – especially if your doing all this breathing now— what AIR are you breathing?? Big Hugs! Jen

Thank you for the “Breath” of fresh air. Not there yet….but…..just thinking about breathing the cells cry out for release. We are either in a state of living or dying. Our first breath gave us life. What you have shared has brought so much thought. Thank you!
