Hey Brian, Excellent post...and it brought me to where you were under the star filled skies.

I haven't had a car since December--and walking in the rain, snow and sunshine, biking, are all good--but i look forward to having my independence back in the next few weeks--and we absolutely take our cars for granted.

enjoyed the springsteen reference, the mullet and the overall sense of freedom i derived from reading about your travels...

oh, yeah, the mullet! must have been the style.

God, I love this post. You really captured the essence and thrills of the "open road." I'm living in the Detroit area right now...I cannot even put into words the utter depression people are in. There is no more rush hour here. Its a shame that the car industries couldn't keep up with "pure science." This state feels so destroyed spiritually.

Oh Brian,
What a love affair we have with our cars. Can I live up to the challenge of curbing my carbon footprint through not logging miles and not just riding with the wind in my hair and the dogs hanging out the windows. Like you I came of age in the 80's and had to have a camaro. I can still feel that car reaving up and roaring over the roads I loved changing gears and barrelling down the road. And still do. I clock some miles. I can eat the right foods, recycle, garden, re-use and reduce. Can I change my car habits... I dont think so. But I promise I will never get in the Suburban or Lincoln ( gas guzzlers) and not be reminded of that as of today. I haul lots of things and on top of the mission I run inspections of mortgages so I clock some miles. The need to haul my family and the tools.. wheelchairs, walkers, and handicap dogs keep me in huge cars. I have to say that you have made me realize that I can consolidate my trips.....Bit I love the article and love the stories. We are a car culture. I can remember Duncan running his 1965 MG up to pick me up for my Debute and the dress wouldn't fit in the car so we put the hoops in the trunk.....hhahaha but it was a fabulous car. Thanks for the eco check. Keep up the great articles. Callie

Ahhh....Jonathan, you've got a wondrous world ahead of you! Enjoy it! But, like with all things, moderation. I've been a roadie all my life (even NPR and CNN did segments about me and my roadtrips!). And I love it. But my life totally changed (in a good way) when I headed my Saturn west on i-80 from New Jersey and lit out for territories -- real permanent-like -- for California and now New Mexico. My car's now a 24 Volvo convertible with 100,000 miles on it already. Yes, yes, I know. But out in these parts, Whole Foods is a really long way away. However, I'm just me in this household. So I cut down my carbon footprint in other ways (like only one shower, if even that...another upside to living alone). Let's just say my carbon footprint's wearing driving driving mocs.

At forty-two years old, I bought my first car - a Mustang - five years ago. Before that I rode buses, skateboarded, and bummed rides to work. Don't talk to me about giving up my car and my freedom miles. I've already done my time.
