Almost 2 years ago I found out that I was borderline Type II Diabetic and by talking to my mom I discovered that it was something that her side of the family struggled with. I thought I was healthy (after all I was 6'0", 225lbs, and only 26) so I hit the treadmill and lost about 45 lbs but my fasting blood sugar level continued to climb. In researching a vegetarian diet last year my wife came across Dr. Banards book and promptly switched us over to a plant based diet. Within 3-6 months I'd lost an additional 15 lbs (I now consistently weigh in at 165 lbs with a normal excersize regime) and my fasting blood sugar has actually been steadily dropping. Today I'm going back in to get my blood tested but I want to note that gone are the days of dizzy spells and accelerated heart beats. I feel great now and I'm excited (not anxious anymore) to see how my numbers reflect that!

There is a lot of information out there about other alternatives to living with diabetes, but I can say one thing definitively: Reading Dr. Banards book and eating a plant based diet 100% reversed my Type II diabetes and there is no way that it can't work for others. Reading his book was important because it really broke down how different foods (even in a plant based diet) break down into sugar so you can plan weekly meals around controlling the release of sugar into your blood stream. If anything it's worth a try because as far as I know, no one has ever died from eating a plant based diet...

Thank you Dr. Barnard. I was excited, my wife was excited, and you should have seen my doctors face when she saw my numbers after the diet shift. Total amazement and gratitude for a patient that helped to cure himself.

Thanks for the excellent post!

When people stop eating processed foods and taking prescribed drugs they unfold the opportunity of developing a one on one relationship with their body. Once this relationship is in tact, the body never starves for what it needs again. Imbalances become in balance, healing happens, life is good!

I am a Type 1 diabetic and gradually changing to a plant-based diet has really helped my blood sugar control. It cannot eliminate the need for insulin because my body stopped producing insulin (Type 1 is an autoimmune disease, whereby the beta cells on the pancreas stop producing insulin; Type 2 involves the insulin resistance that Kathy described above). I do believe deep down that if I had always had the gluten-free, vegan diet I have now, that my body would not have entered the autoimmune crisis that led to my diabetes.... but I didn't know then what I know now. However, I am confident that changing my lifestyle and focusing on food as medicine has prevented the ongoing decline of my health and I now live a wonderful life, maybe even thanks to the Type 1 diabetes.

Sorry for the long-winded comment.... thank you Kathy for specifying which diabetes you were addressing... this is so rare but much appreciated by a Type 1 diabetic! Michelle S.
